History
Upholstery has been part of our family for generations. My grandfather began his career at The Solitaire factory, working alongside my great-uncle. It was there that their skill, dedication, and reputation for craftsmanship first took root — values that continue to guide my work today.
From an early age, I was immersed in the trade, fascinated by the care and precision behind every piece. In 2013, I began a formal apprenticeship under my grandfather — a Master Upholsterer with more than 50 years of experience. Under his guidance, I not only learned the fundamentals of the craft but also had the privilege of restoring furniture by some of the most renowned makers of Victorian Britain, a period I believe represents the height of craftsmanship.
Together, we worked on pieces by:
-
Waring & Gillow — celebrated for their luxurious designs that furnished some of Britain’s grandest homes.
-
Hampton & Sons — respected suppliers to royalty and aristocracy.
-
Holland & Sons — one of the largest cabinetmakers of the Victorian era, famed for exceptional quality and royal commissions.
-
Howard & Sons — legendary for their deep, comfortable armchairs, still highly prized today.
-
Hindley & Sons — admired for bespoke craftsmanship and classical design.
-
Cornelius V. Smith — a highly regarded London maker, known for distinctive, finely finished furniture.
-
J. Shoolbred — renowned Victorian retailer, famous for stylish, well-made pieces.
Working on these historic examples of design gave me a profound respect for their elegance, durability, and timeless appeal. My grandfather’s knowledge, patience, and uncompromising standards shaped not only my skills but also my philosophy as a craftsman.
After completing my four-year apprenticeship, I worked across various workshops as a journeyman, further refining my techniques and experience across a wide range of upholstery styles.
Today, I carry forward that legacy. Whether restoring a treasured heirloom or creating bespoke upholstered furniture, every project is completed with the same pride, skill, and attention to detail that has defined my family’s work for decades.
